Futur proche — Explained

Rules and usage

The futur proche, or immediate future, is one of the most useful ways to talk about actions that will happen in the near future. It is much more common in everyday French than the simple future tense, especially in spoken language.

When to Use Futur Proche

  • This tense expresses an action that will happen very soon, usually within the next few hours, days, or weeks. It conveys a sense of certainty and immediacy that the simple future does not always have.
  • Use it for plans and intentions: Je vais faire les courses demain.
  • Use it for predictions about the near future: Il va pleuvoir ce soir.
  • Use it when something is about to happen or is imminent: L'avion va décoller dans dix minutes.
  • Use it in everyday conversation instead of the simple future: Nous allons rencontrer nos amis au café.
