Rules and usage
Le futur simple (the simple future tense) is used to express actions that will happen at a specific point in the future. Unlike the near future constructed with aller, the futur simple is more formal and literary, widely used in French for definite events, plans, and predictions. It is one of the most important ways to talk about what will happen.
When to use the futur simple
- Use it for definite future plans or actions: Je partirai demain. (I will leave tomorrow.)
- Use it for predictions about the future: Il fera beau. (It will be nice weather.)
- Use it in formal, written, or literary contexts where you need a more serious tone: Vous recevrez une réponse bientôt. (You will receive an answer soon.)
- Use it after time conjunctions like "quand" and "si" in the main clause: Quand tu reviendras, nous ferons la fête. (When you come back, we will have a party.)
