Rules and usage
The plural suffix in Turkish, spelled -lar or -ler depending on vowel harmony, marks that a noun refers to more than one thing. Unlike in English, Turkish plurals are not always mandatory—context sometimes makes the plural meaning clear without the suffix. Understanding when and how to use -lar / -ler is essential for accurate speech and writing.
The Two Allomorphs: -lar and -ler
- Turkish has two forms of the plural suffix because of vowel harmony. The choice depends on the vowel in the final syllable of the noun:
- Use -lar after back vowels (a, ı, o, u): kitaplar (books), kızlar (girls), odalar (rooms)
- Use -ler after front vowels (e, i, ö, ü): evler (houses), kediler (cats), öğrenciler (students)
- When a noun ends in a consonant, you add the suffix directly. When it ends in a vowel, you insert a buffer consonant (usually -y-) before the plural suffix to ease pronunciation.
