Rules and usage
Consonant softening and hardening are phonological processes in Turkish where consonants change their quality when they appear in specific positions within words, particularly at morpheme boundaries. Understanding these processes is essential for correct spelling and pronunciation of Turkish words with suffixes.
When Consonant Softening Occurs
- Consonant softening happens when a hard (unvoiced) consonant appears before a vowel in a suffix that follows a root ending in that consonant. This is a natural sound change that makes the transition between root and suffix smoother. The softening is obligatory in Turkish and not optional: whenever the conditions are met, the consonant must soften.
- Examples of basic softening:
- kitap + -ı becomes kitabı (the book/it)
- sepet + -in becomes sebetin (the basket's)
- kapat + -ı becomes kapadı (he/she/it closed)
- renk + -i becomes rengi (the color)
