Rules and usage

The future tense in Turkish uses the suffix -acak or -ecek, which attaches directly to the verb stem. This form expresses planned or anticipated actions that will happen in the future, and it is one of the most commonly used future constructions in everyday Turkish speech.

When to use the future tense

  • The -acak/-ecek form shows an action or state that will happen in the future. It is used for predictions, plans, arrangements, and general statements about what will occur. Unlike some future expressions, this form can sound quite definite compared to other future possibilities in Turkish.
  • Yarın gelecek. (He/she will come tomorrow.)
  • Akşam eve gideceğim. (I will go home in the evening.)
  • Pazartesi toplantı olacak. (There will be a meeting on Monday.)
  • This form is different from the immediate future (using -mak üzere or -acak olmak) and should not be confused with the conditional mood.
