Dativ — Explained

Rules and usage

The dative case is the "to" or "for" case in German. It signals the indirect object—the person or thing that receives the action or benefits from it. You will encounter the dative constantly when speaking German, and mastering it is essential for constructing natural sentences.

When to Use the Dative

  • The dative marks the indirect object: the recipient of something or the person for whom an action happens.
  • Certain verbs always require a dative object: Ich helfe meinem Vater (I help my father). Mir schmeckt das Essen (The food tastes good to me).
  • Many prepositions govern the dative: mit, bei, nach, aus, von, zu, in, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen (when expressing location or "being in" a place, not motion into it).
  • Some prepositions take the dative when answering "where" (location) and the accusative when answering "where to" (direction): Der Kaffee steht auf dem Tisch (dative: where) but Ich stelle den Kaffee auf den Tisch (accusative: where to).
