Rules and usage

The Plusquamperfekt is German's way of expressing "the past before the past." It describes an action that happened before another action in the past. You use it most often in narratives and when explaining the sequence of events, particularly after words like nachdem (after), bevor (before), or als (when).

When to Use the Plusquamperfekt

  • To show that one past action happened before another past action: Nachdem er das Buch gelesen hatte, ging er ins Bett. (After he had read the book, he went to bed.)
  • In narratives to establish which event came first: Sie war schon gegangen, als er ankam. (She had already left when he arrived.)
  • In explanations of why something happened in the past: Ich konnte nicht schlafen, weil ich zu viel Kaffee getrunken hatte. (I couldn't sleep because I had drunk too much coffee.)
  • Often with the adverbs schon (already), bereits (already), or noch nicht (not yet): Er hatte die Arbeit noch nicht beendet. (He had not yet finished the work.)
