Präsens — Explained

18 example sentences · explanation · free

Rules and usage

The German present tense, or Präsens, is the most frequently used tense in German. It describes actions happening now, general truths, habitual actions, or even planned future events. Unlike English, German does not use a progressive form (no "I am going"), so the simple present tense covers both "I go" and "I am going."

When the Präsens is used

  • Immediate present: Ich schreibe einen Brief. (I am writing a letter / I write a letter.)
  • Habitual or regular actions: Ich fahre jeden Morgen zur Arbeit. (I drive to work every morning.)
  • General truths: Wasser kocht bei hundert Grad. (Water boils at 100 degrees.)
  • Near future with a time marker: Morgen fahren wir in den Urlaub. (Tomorrow we are going on vacation.)
  • Narratives in storytelling: Der Mann geht zur Tür und öffnet sie. (The man goes to the door and opens it.)
