Rules and usage

Modal verbs in German express ability, permission, obligation, desire, and necessity. They are among the most frequently used verbs in everyday German, appearing in nearly every conversation. Unlike English, German modal verbs follow strict conjugation patterns and always pair with an infinitive verb at the end of the clause, which creates a distinctive word order that learners must master.

The Six German Modal Verbs and Their Meanings

The six core modal verbs are dürfen, können, mögen, müssen, sollen, and wollen. Dürfen means to be allowed to or may. Können means to be able to or can. Mögen means to like, and in conditional form möchte means would like to. Müssen means to have to or must. Sollen means to should, to be supposed to, or shall. Wollen means to want to or will. Each carries a distinct nuance that learners must memorize through exposure and practice. Examples: Ich darf das machen. (I am allowed to do that.) Ich kann Deutsch sprechen. (I can speak German.) Ich möchte ein Bier. (I would like a beer.) Ich muss zur Arbeit gehen. (I have to go to work.) Ich soll den Arzt anrufen. (I am supposed to call the doctor.) Ich will nach Berlin fahren. (I want to go to Berlin.)
