Rules and usage
The imperative mood (emir kipi) and optative mood (istek kipi) are two related moods in Turkish that express commands, requests, and wishes. The imperative gives direct orders, while the optative expresses hopes, desires, or softer suggestions. Both moods follow similar patterns but create very different tones and social contexts.
When to Use the Imperative Mood
- Use the imperative to give direct commands: Git! (Go!)
- Use it for instructions or urgent requests: Pencereyi aç. (Open the window.)
- Use it with people of equal or lower status; it can sound rude with elders or strangers
- The imperative assumes the listener will obey or comply
- Common in everyday speech with friends and family: Gel buraya! (Come here!)
