Rules and usage
The conditional mood in Turkish, expressed through the suffixes -sa or -se, conveys conditions, hypotheses, and hypothetical situations. It is one of the most frequently used moods and is essential for expressing "if...then" statements and polite requests. Understanding its formation and usage is crucial for intermediate Turkish learners.
When to Use the Conditional Mood
- It expresses conditions about future possibilities: Gelse, memnun olurum (If he comes, I will be happy).
- It conveys hypothetical or contrary-to-fact situations: Zengin olsam, dünyayı gezerdim (If I were rich, I would travel the world).
- It is used in polite requests and suggestions: Yardım etsene? (Would you help me?).
- It appears in sentences introduced by eğer (if): Eğer hasta olsa, evde kalır (If he were sick, he would stay home).
- It can soften commands or suggestions: Oraya gitsek mi? (Should we go there?).
