Rules and usage
Konjunktiv II is the subjunctive mood used to express hypothetical, contrary-to-fact, or polite situations in German. It is essential for discussing wishes, conditions, and unreal scenarios.
Formation of Konjunktiv II
- For most verbs, Konjunktiv II is formed from the simple past (Präteritum) stem and then a subjunctive ending is added: -e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en
- Weak verbs: The Konjunktiv II form is identical to the simple past, so German speakers usually prefer the würde-construction instead
- Beispiel: ich spielte / ich würde spielen (I would play)
- Beispiel: du fragtest / du würdest fragen (you would ask)
- Strong verbs: Take the simple past stem and add an umlaut to a, o, or u vowels, then add the subjunctive endings
